Common questions about carbon assessments, AASB S2 compliance, and our services.
Understanding the Requirements
Do I legally need a carbon assessment?
It depends on your business size. AASB S2 mandatory reporting applies to:
- Group 1 (Large): Revenue >$500m OR Assets >$1bn OR Employees >500 (reporting since Jan 2025)
- Group 2 (Medium): Revenue >$200m OR Assets >$500m OR Employees >250 (reporting from July 2026)
- Group 3 (Smaller): Revenue >$50m OR Assets >$25m OR Employees >100 (reporting from July 2027)
Even if you’re below these thresholds, you may still need a carbon assessment for:
✓ Government tenders (many now require carbon reporting)
✓ Supply chain requirements (if you supply to Group 1/2 companies)
✓ Green finance or sustainability-linked loans
✓ Climate Active or B Corp certification
✓ Voluntary sustainability reporting
What’s AASB S2 and does it apply to me?
AASB S2 is Australia’s mandatory climate-related disclosure standard. It requires certain companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related risks.
If you meet the thresholds above (2 out of 3 criteria), it applies to you.
If you’re below the thresholds, you may still need reporting for tenders, supply chain compliance, or voluntary certification.
What’s Scope 3 and why does it matter?
Scope 3 = emissions from your supply chain (suppliers, business travel, waste, etc.).
Why it matters:
- Scope 3 typically represents 70%+ of a company’s total emissions
- Group 1 companies MUST report Scope 3 from July 2026 (Year 2 of reporting)
- This means they need emissions data from ALL their suppliers
- If you supply to large companies, they will ask you for your emissions data
Industry research shows “supplier data is patchy” – most suppliers aren’t ready.
When do I need to comply?
Mandatory reporting timeline:
- Group 1: Started 1 January 2025 (Scope 3 mandatory from July 2026)
- Group 2: Starts 1 July 2026
- Group 3: Starts 1 July 2027
For suppliers: Your customer will ask for data when they need to report Scope 3. For Group 1 companies, that’s July 2026 (4 months away).
For tenders/grants: Requirements vary, but many now require reports less than 6-12 months old.

What if I don’t have all my data?
We can work with incomplete data using:
- Industry-standard emission factors
- Reasonable estimates based on business type
- Proxy data from similar businesses
However, the more accurate data you provide, the more accurate your assessment will be.
We’ll work with you to identify what data you have and fill gaps appropriately. This is noted in the report methodology section.
Why do annual updates cost less?
AASB S2 requires annual reporting. Annual updates are 40-60% cheaper because:
✓ We already have your baseline data
✓ Faster processing (3-5 days)
✓ Streamlined data collection
✓ Existing methodology in place
Annual updates include updated calculations, year-over-year comparison, and refreshed compliance documentation.
